Wing Nuts
Wing nuts are one piece nuts with two wings—180° apart—that protrude from an integral round base with a flat bearing surface. They are used in low-torque applications that require quick or frequent adjustment or disassembly and are intended to be tighten and released using your fingers.
Threads are standard right-hand and Unified inch coarse series (UNC, Unified National Coarse) or Unified inch fine (UNF, Unified National Fine).
Wing nut size refers to its nominal thread diameter. Typically, sizes range from about #6 to 3/4". Sizes less than 1/4" are listed as a number size (the larger the number the larger the size) while sizes that are 1/4" and larger are specified in inches, usually fractional rather than decimal. Not all types are available in all sizes.
Dimensions vary with the size of the wing nut.
Steel, stainless steel and brass are prevalent materials for wing nuts. A common finish for steel is zinc plated.
Refer to ASME B18.17 for specifications relating to wing nuts.
